Feeling Really Stupid
I noticed about a month ago that the reflector in my tail/brake light lens had warped a bit inside the tag window. Yesterday I was installing frenched trim rings on the turn signals and thought I'd change bulbs while I had them open. I tried the turn signals, OK. Tried the brakes. No brake lights. Then after getting out the manual and checking wiring and the added turn/break light module it hit me. It wasn't that the brake lights didn't work. They were stuck on! Hence the melting lens. Duh! But that's not why I feel stupid. I noticed the melting lens a month ago! I haven't had brake lights for longer than that. I try to remember to check this stuff but I obviously haven't been doing a very good job.

When I was heavy into the Corvette community, I used to have a small, convex mirror (think "blind spot mirror") installed on the wall behind where I parked so that I could check the rear lights before I pulled out of the garage. This was particularly useful in checking the brake lights and reverse lights (which are very small on the C5 series Vette). You can also mount a second one on your garage door to check your front lights, turn signals, etc.
Costs about 8 bucks each at any auto parts place or Wally World and can be mounted on the wall or garage door with velcro.
A great way to check your lights before hitting the road.
