The MOCO won't help, little long
So I have been looking through the threads and seen where people say to contact the MOCO when you have trouble with the dealer. So I give them a call today to see if I can find out if there are any old TSB's about my transmission case. Essentially I am told all request shoud go through the dealer and if I'm not getting anywhere with them to take it to another dealer. After a year of trying to fix a leak from what we believe is my transmission now, the local dealer has had my bike for three weeks and cannot figure out where it is leaking from. I have had some folks tell me that there were some troubles with castings of the transmission case's a while back and to find the TSB's. No luck with that. That is what prompted my call to corporate and they just told me to take it somewhere else and pay them to tell me they cannot figure it out. (Not there exact words, but that is how I felt) Has anyone else run into a similar situation? How did you get it resolved? Apparently after my conversation today there is no other option than to deal with the local dealer and be happy with that. Definitely makes me look towards a different make when I purchase my next bike, I don't want to have to go through this again.

Kind of late for a manufacturing defect to be showing up on a '93, has it always leaked?
How bad is it leaking?
With that old of a bike you might want to use an indy, instead of dealers.
If you want to find the leak yourself. Thoroughly clean and degrease the transmission.
Add dye to the fluid, dusting the outside of the suspected area with baby powder will make it easier to see.

I hate that you cannot find the source of your leaking tranny and fix it... but let's be realistic for a moment. Even if you find a tsb for that year and model it doesn't automatically fix your problem... and it certainly would no longer be the factory's or dealer's responsibility I would spend more time finding the leak myself or take the bike to someone who cares... usually a non-dealer independent bike shop. If the only problem you have with a 17 year old bike (no matter what the make or model) is a leak from the tranny you are lucky my friend.

My sons Street Bob with less than 7000 on it is an 07 out of warranty. The oil pump went out which caused some other problems to say the least. The local dealer has tried to get Harley to kick in some parts, so a week or so goes by and Harley says no way. Cost for the repair is in the neighborhood of $1700.00.What are you going to do? I know what Im not going to, is buy a new Harley.

you will have to take the outer primary cover off. then take the primary chain, compensator, and clutch off. then remove the starter off of the inner primary. then take the inner primary off. you will need to take the front pulley off to see if the 5th gear seal is leaking. if you find a spot where it looks like it is leaking then that's where it is leaking. if the leak is only a couple of drips a week, i would leave it alone until it gets worse.

I have had the bike looked at by two other indy's at over $2000.00 dollars out of pocket. I have replaced a main drive gear, had the primary and inner off about 6 times, and have replaced the gaskets on my cylinders because they thought it may be motor oil running down between the transmission. We tried the dye thing only to find out that the oil HD uses will already show up under a black light. (Good to know in the future)The bike only has 21k miles on it and my father had purchased it from the original owner in IA about 16 months before he passed. It was not leaking when I brought the bike to Texas but after I put new tires on it and rode it 30 miles home, it started leaking and hasn't stopped for a year now. I'm not trying to get the MOCO to warrenty it, I am just trying to see if this was a problem that will require a new case before I go and by one and have to pay to have it replaced. I don't want to put another 1500 hundred in it just to find out it isn't fixed. I am at the point where it may be better to junk the bike and look for another as the dealer also found a crack in the case when they tore it down this time. Just eight weeks ago there was no crack and now there is which will be another significant bill to pay for. Many have said that both of these issues have been problems with Dyna's of that time frame and I don't want to keep putting money into it with no results. Every time the indy got into it, something else would go wrong within 200 miles of repair. Even when they would do "warrenty" work on their repair it would cost me 300 dollars some way or another. This is reminding me of some of my fathers old shovels where they would spend more time tore down than being ridden.

How bad is the leak? Describe the puddle or mess. If you are losing oil then you are adding oil. Where? You have changed a lot of things searching for a leak. What oil are you running in the transmission? If it was me--I would find out what is leaking first for sure then fix what it is. If it is leaking enough to be a bother then you should be able to find it. If it is just a mist--ride it till it leaks then you will find it. Oil is cheaper then your mechanics. How good are your mechanics?
