Default Odering Harley Parts....

So I got a XL1200c recently and I wanted to get a back rest for my wife, so we went to the dealer and ordered the pad/sissy bar/side plates last friday. I just called the dealer yesterday to check the status and they said that the parts havent even shipped from Harley yet and they they take 4-5 business days via UPS!!!???
I also have a Kawasaki Ninja that I race, so occasionally I go to the dealer for some OEM parts. It is usually never more than a 3-4 day wait total. Basically seems that the Kawi dealer gets deliveries 2-3 times a week and when you order something your stuff is just put on the next shipment.

To me, it seems like, when I went to the HD dealer all they did was order the stuff from the online parts catalogue the same way I could have from home... is this how it normally goes when ordering from a HD dealer?

Yep, it's normal now to have to wait for parts to get sent to the dealer.

Dealers don't stock big ticket items anymore. Ordering and waiting is the norm.

Dealers' parts/accessories systems are networked. If you ask nicely, the parts counter rep might tell you if other stores in your area have what you want.

Yep. You still have to wait for parts, but it's a cheaper wait.

The items OP ordered aren't exactly big ticket items. Regardless, I'm with you about asking them to check other dealer's inventory. I've done that several times - with much success. I had to ride about 15 miles to the other dealer, but I had my items the same day.

Try Zanotti HD in Butler PA on line. Really nice people and 10-20% cheaper. I have used them for years.

see Harley Davidson Rule #1: NEVER START MODS UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL PARTS IN HAND.

That is what I am going to do. I dont mind waiting for shipping if I buy online, but the whole reason I went to the dealer was because I thought Id get it faster. Like I said from my Kawi dealer I get charged no shipping and they usually get it in with their orders in 2-3 days. It has been a week at HD and they hadent even shipped yet, lol.
