HD might be hurting more then we know

After all these years!
Harley has withstood depressions, World Wars, the AMF debaucle and the Japanese invasion!
Harley has nothing to fear but the EPA! The people that killed the Corvair and the air cooled Volkswagon are will kill the MOCO. It started in earnest in 07 and they got serious about it in 2010.
It will be a slow death but as the word gets out on the constipated ovens HD is building for the EPA it will be hard for any Ad agency to overcome it.

But other motorcycle manufacturers are building Air/oil cooled motorcycles that ARE NOT CONSTIPATED OVENS and don't blame their problems on the EPA.....If HD would WORK (do serious R&D) on their moptors they could FIX the CONSTIPATED OVEN HEAT and chug along just fine...
maybe the conspiracy isn't with the japs or the EPA. maybe the ***** are working us over.

if the moco is in trouble they bring it on themselves by having everything rediculously over priced....from bikes to servicings to parts and accessories.

Well we can spread the chicken guts out on the table, or consult the Ouija board, or go to an astrologer, or look for the hidden message on our Spongebob decoder rings in an attempt to understand how HOG is doing financially.
Or we can look at their most recent SEC filings. Sales are off as is to be expected during a deep recession, but not off as far as their competitors sales are. They've actually picked up market share. They have an excellent current ratio (including $1.6B in cash). They also seem to be controlling costs in anticipation of doing business and making money at their current volume. In other words, not likely to capsize any time soon.
If anyone is concerned for the viability of HOG as a going concern, let your heart not be troubled. They are way down the list of US companies that are likely to fail. If you are just part of the whispering campaign to undermine confidence in the company, or if you just like to worry over nothing forgive the interruption.

Yea, but they can water cool and stick that catalytic converter in the headpipe and it don't matter. You are correct, all domestic and foriegn bikes imported into the U.S. have to meet the tough 2010 EPA standard.
Thing is HD lives by that signature sound and the cat in the headpipe hurts them worse than it does a metric cause they all sound like crap anyway! Their modern engine designs will still allow a little HP and torque also with a cat. That 70 year old air pump of HD's is not suited to leaning out the AFR, EPA Cams and a Cat in the headpipe.
Harley should come up with a way of meeting those EPA standards without lazy engineering and copying the automotive industry, just slap a cat on em. They have more of a vested intrest in doing so!
They can put a Rover on Mars but can't clean up an air pump without resorting to Catalytic Converters. R&D is the word of the day as you said!
