Default This settles it. I'm not mechanically inclined and never will be.

Tried the "simple" operation of replacing the stock switches on my 09 FXDF this afternoon.

Over 90 minutes later, and not only are the switches not replaced, I can't get the spring for the stock horn switch back into place, I can't get the right side switch housing back together, and the throttle is completely off and I can't get that back on either (I also lost one of the brass throttle cable ferrules that I eventually found).

Now I'm going to need the dealership to come out, pick up my bike, and fix my mistakes. I'm done working on my bike myself.

It's really not that hard to do. I remember only having to use a torx bit and had the whole thing apart relatively quickly. What's causing you so much headaches?

PICS WOULD HELP

Some people are not mechanically inclined & really can't work on things that seem simple to others. Advice given on this forum to do your own maintenance doesn't apply to everyone who rides. If you can't turn a screwdriver, and there are people who can't, please let a mechanic work on your bike.

Sorry, but I had to laugh. Maybe it's because somewhere along the line I may have felt your pain. I haven't messed up my bike so bad they had to haul it away though. Look at the bright side. Now you know your limitations!

I'm curious why you were replacing switches - were you chroming the controls or something?

Well if it makes you feel better, working on switch controls has more to do with finger dexterity than mechanical inclination...I know people than can rebuild motors that will not touch the switches...lol

When you feel yourself getting frustrated take a step back and away from it for a few minutes.Pissed and working on tedious bs doesn't work. Many times after a short break you will figure it out rather easily and be like wth was I thinking and or doing.

And as golf stated some people don't know which end of the screwdriver to hold.

No shame in it. I just hate doing that stuff myself.

"Simple" is not what my indy calls it. If you do a search you'll find a lot of posts from "mechanically inclined" guys that have cursed at those switches will trying to make them chrome. Finger dexterity and patience is more important than mech ab.

Default Mechanical

I have been working on cars, boat and motorcycles since 1964 and Harleys are the hardest. Could be my age. Everything is lock-tight tight and the brake light switch in the hand lever is a real pain. I have a buddy who throws stuff when he gets frustrated. I tell him never never work on a Harley. It take more then mechanical ability on a Harley since just breaking a screw loose will damage the chrome if you are not careful, think ahead and be patient. I guess if you did it everyday it would be OK and I enjoy working on mine but I could not do it for a living.
