I have a friend that did it last year. This year my youngest son signed up to do the 1K iron butt and do it in conjunction with our ride to Sturgis. He started out on Halstead and I-80 in the Chicago Burbs.

I met him when he was about 150 miles into it. When we reached the Elk View Camp grounds at exit 37 on I-90, I pealed off to the campgrounds and he continued to Spearfish and did his last fuel up and found a witness.

He had 1,028 and I was at about 850. It was done in 12.5 hours. The ride was all interstate. 1-80,I-29 and I-90. The speed was at 75 to 80 mph.

It cost $45 to sign up and you need a beginning witness and an ending one. Then you mail in all the gas receipts to the organization that runs the deal. Once they check it out you will get a certificate.

I have had a number of runs at about 900 miles. But, I am not interested in paying $45 for the piece of paper.

There is many other certificates available like 1,500 in 36 hours, 50 states in 50 days, coast to coast and so on.

I did the SS1000 as part of a children's charity ride with five friends. One guy suggested it and the rest of us joined him.

The first 400 was two lane roads and the last 600 was I-10 across New Mexico and Arizona. The only reason we took as long as we did was because one guy had to stop every 90 miles or so for gas.

You can do the SS1000 in 24 hours and still stop at restaurants for meals and blow 20 minutes as gas stops without any problem.

The SS1500 in 24 hours would be much more of a challenge, but I don't plan on doing it.

I don't know how the hell anyone can do 1500 in 24 hours that's nuts. I think the quickest 1000 miles I've done was the first one I did on my Sportster. We finished it in 18 hours and that was with a 1 hour lunch at Cracker Barrel and stopping every 175 miles for gas. I couldn't go over 70mph or my bike would eat oil quicker than Oprah eats Krispy Kreme. Had to carry 3 quarts of oil with me on that ride.
A group of us did do the 1500 miles in about 34 hours to get the Bun Burner 1500 certification while we were doing the Saddlesore 2000 ride.
I'd love to do the 50CC coast to coast ride in 50 hours but I'd have to come up with a damn good route for that one.
This crap gets addicting for some reason or maybe I'm just crazier than a **** house rat.

You get much more than a piece of paper for $45. That license plate back (that doesn't fit an Ultra) must cost at least .50 to make.....and we all pay three bucks apiece for pins at rallyes.

sounds like a scam, somebody was clever to offer to 'certify' folks for sitting on a bike for x,xxx miles

its an endurance thing - if you do it, do it for yourself ... like medals and trophys- okay...once you get it, then what're you going to do with it?

I guess it just depends on what you have fun spending your money on. Some people like to ride 10-20 miles to the dealer and plop down $45 for a chrome trinket for their bike and some others like to ride a thousand miles and spend $45 on a certificate.
In a way they are both a waste of money but it sure is fun hopping on the bike to ride and get them.

The 50 states in 50 days sounds interesting. Does anyone have a route already planned to make this easy? This sounds safe and doable if you fly to Hawaii and Alaska. If this is a thread stealer, please ignore.

I think you are talking about the 50CC ride which is a coast to coast ride in 50 hours.

They have a 48-10 ride where you visit 48 states in 10 days.

I've never done one. I think it'd be fun just to get to point be fast. Dumb if you are trying to enjoy the ride.
Nothing against them, and I'm sure I'll do one someday.

No offense to the guys that do it. But, I'll chime in with my opinion.

A 1000 miles in a day? I don't care what kind of motorcycle you're on, that's not fun. Sorry. I've been riding since I was 14 and have never put a 1000 miles in on one day. And I never plan to.

Guess I won't be doin' the Hoka Hey next year....heehehe. (great stories though IronAss, keep postin' them!!)
