Floating brake disks anyone?
Hi All,
The new 10 (or 11) Ultra is just around the corner and I always thought about putting on floating brake disks... although never got around to it on the Road King. What I do have on the Road King is pulsating front brakes. I've read this can be eliminated by the floaters, but also hear the floaters can make noise. Does anyone have HD floating discs and do you like them... pros and cons? Thanks
Dave

Actually floaters allow for radial expansion due to heat and this lessens the chance of warping because of this. I have them on the front and like them but never had the stock front rotors on my 08 FLHX so I don't have a frame of reference for this bike.

Floating rotors will warp as well. The floating arrangement is to align the rotor with the centreline of the caliper/pads - radial expansion is not the issue, it's differential expansion due to material specs and manufacture that result in warpage. I've got floaters on the SG and they pulse already when coming to a halt......

The '08 Wide Glide came stock with a floating front rotor.
A caliper piston stuck on mine, badly warping the rotor - caliper and rotor replaced under warranty.
The new rotor warped about 15K later and was replaced under factory warranty.
Now at a little over 90K and the rotor is starting to warp again, but not bad enough to be replaced under the extended warranty according to HD.
So, floating rotors are not exempt from warping.
