I'm a fan of the Ironhorse motorcycle lodge in Stecoah, NC (~ 25miles from deals gap). It's very quiet, partly because it's off the main road about a mile or so plus it seems they attract a milder crowd.
Camping is cheap. $15/day. Semi private rooms are $64.95. Basic and comfortable. Semi private means you share a bathroom with the people in the room opposite you.
Room / bathroom / room.

I was just looking at some Gatlinburg stuff and saw that October is the ON season around there - people coming to look at leaves turning colors (do they come from places that don't have leaves?? New York? Miami?)
Apparently it costs a lot around the Smokies in October.
I have rented the cabins down there before and that's the best way to go - nobody in the next room, kitchen, pool table, hot tub, etc.

I visited Gatlinburg for the first time during my recent trip to the Dragon a few weeks back. What a lil tourist trap in the mountains. Also, we saw a pay-to-park lot with a sign that read "no motorcycles". Sorry but I wouldn't recommend that town for anything.

we just spent a couple of nights in the microtel just outside of Bryson City, NC. Clean, good rates, biker friendly and close to all the good riding you could want.
