Default Motorcycle Checkpoint on August 22, in Nassau County, NY

On Sunday, August 22, 2010, The New York State Police in Troop “L” will conduct a motorcycle safety and education checkpoint in Nassau County. Troopers assigned to the detail will be proactively enforcing applicable vehicle and traffic laws as well as conducting educational efforts, with special emphasis on safety violations: substandard helmets, unsafe tires, insufficient lighting, unlicensed and operating out of class, and similar violations. Members of the media interested in covering the event can contact Trooper Ken Pantol Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM (631) 756-3369 for details.

PS: They don't say exactly where, so heads up.

The way you make it sound, I'd think it's more of a "good faith" heads up and not necessarily a "we're out to get you" operation. I just received a AMA email in regards to NHTSA offering funds to support depts. with setting up "motorcycle only" check points in an effort to reduce rising motorcycle accidents. AMA is trying to get the specifics from NHTSA, and so far they have not responded. Sounds like discrimination of MC riders. Helmets, pipes, licensing, registration etc. More to follow...

Well, if your legal I suppose it wouldn't amount
to much, but how many are actually legal these
days. I think they advertise it so some can't claim
a sneak attack on bikers. If your comfortable with
it, stop in and enjoy a friendly moment of education...

Sounds like a good day NOT to ride there. Would be cool if the word got at and there were no bikes to stop. It would make the whole thing look like the bullshit it is...discrimination against motorcycle enthusiasts.

I would think most in that area who ride know whats legal and whats not legal.
The police dont have to announce ahead of time, any check points.
Here in "Vegas, the police announce check points for DWI/DUI ahead of time and the press tells us exactly where and when and yet they always nab a good number.

I know at my end of NYS they check for DOT helmets. May look at pipes.

Any one hear of DOT approved eye wear? I was just told at a bike meet that NYS will ticket for that. I never even knew there was such a thng as DOT eye wear

you know, you put a frog in a pan of water and turn on the heat the frog will swim around till the water boils, put a frog in a boiling pot he will jump out or at least try to escape.....sounds to me like there are a lot of frogs in a pot that is not boiling yet
personally i dont care if you think its alright to be targeted, i think its just a start of eroding personal liberties..but that is just me

Last I knew, if you didn't have a windscreen or a face shield, you were
required to wear "safety glasses."

I don't think anyone suggested it was alright. Frogs? I know nothing about
frogs.

they post the info to gain voluntary compliance - despite all the belief in conspiracies, 'they' (LEO) would rather you just follow the law (or if you don't like it, get it changed, but abide by the law until its changed)
