Default Freiken paying at the pump.... BS....

I had Texaco put a hold on my visa debit card for a 100 bucks on saturday when I paid at the pump plus the actual charge for gas. I was told tonight that the money will be put back into my account tomorrow evening 9Wednesday) at the latest. The best my bank could tell me was to never pay at the pump, always go inside.
They also said that Texaco, Chevron, and Exon all now put a 100 dollar hold on your card when you pay at the pump. So much for the convienence of paying at the pump.
What a pain in the *** this has been. Granted most of you say not having access to a 100 bucks is just an inconvienance for a few days but Im on unemployment and scratching to get by till I can find another job or finish my degree, so having my 100 bucks inaccessible for 5 days is just insane.

Never heard of such a thing. I've been paying at the pump with my credit card for some 15-20 years now (or whenever they offered the service) and have never had a problem.

Dude, I have access to $100 cash, but I still think that is pretty messed up. I cant believe that they can actually do that. I thought they could only hold up to the value of the purchase. Crazy.

That has never happen to me before however I've experienced hotel holding $227 for 5 days when I only slept for one night at $89.00 rate on my debit card. Never again...

That is common. BUT not all Texaco's or Exxons do that. I would tell the owner or manager that you will not be back because of that. Just find another that does not do that.

Did you run it as a debit? Pretty sure that only happens with a debit
transaction. I always select credit at the pump when using a Visa debit card and I never
have any problems.

The same thing has happened to us. A ramada Inn in Harrisonburg Va was notorious for it. And even a Sleep in there did the same thing. Basturds!

I'd heard it was a common practice when buying gas with a debit card.
I only use a credit card if not paying cash.

Could make you overdrawn if you get near your limit and add another charge to your account.

I've seen news reports about this, gas stations, hotels and other businesses do it as a matter of policy. I don't remember what the reason was for the gas stations but the hotels lock a certain amount for security deposit in case you trash the room.

It was credit not debit. The Texaco by me only has the credit option. Slide the card and type in your zipcode. The owner could care less about losing my business, its a good sized truck stop. I dont go there often and this was the first time they hit me like that. I will not be going back.
Hell unless I have to go out of town I usually only put gas in my truck about once every 2 weeks. I ride my bike everywhere. I have put almost 10000 miles on my bike since I bought it last September.
What I didnt understand though was charging a 100 bucks then a separate 29.06 charge for the actual gas purchased. The 29.06 already cleared my acount but the 100 is still tied up. Sounds like they are trying to scam a little extra interest off the cash.
