I use the Garmin Nuvi 750. You can pick them up for less than $150. The Nuvi series has the brightest screen on the market.

I use an even older C330 (street pilot). Found a mount on line and ran a USB adapter with a car charger to my charger pigtail for my battery tender. Works fine.

My riding buddy has a Garmin Nuvi 750 - bought a bike attachment and uses it for both the car and bike. Works great - finds us the nearest Dunk`ns

My son used the inexpensive Tom Tom on our ride last year to the Arctic Circle.
He made a mount and put a plastic sandwich bag on it. Worked great for the 9K trip.

Be careful of inexpensive GPS systems with speakers built into them (or telephones). Rainstorms play hell with them - the water gets into the unit through the outlets for the speakers or other recharger or headphone ports. They weren't designed to be waterproof. (Although the ziplock baggie might go a long way towards helping that!)

I just returned from a 4780 mile ride during which nearly all my navigation was by a Garmin Zumo 550. (And I rode through about 4 really good rainstorms as well as another 3 or 4 minor rain showers.) These are pretty reasonable now, as newer units have been released, and I was completely satisfied with the way mine performed. Can't say enough about the benefits of touring with the Zumo.

YMMV.

I used a Nuvi 200 on a RAM mount for the Ultra. Put a ziplock over it for rain, it doesn't get a lot of rain on it behind the fairing in motion. I got the Nuvi in a pawn shop for $40 and got a second one as a backup, just in case. I used it for 5700 mile road trip this summer, just had to make sure it was set to avoid dirt roads.
