Default 1000 mile service: does it have to be exactly 1K miles?

My new 2011 Road Glide Ultra is going to most likely hit 1000 miles by the end of this weekend. I already scheduled the 1K service but the soonest any dealer around can fit me in is August 17th. Thats over a week away. Is it unwise to ride the bike past 1000 miles before servicing or is it generally okay to go over in mileage? The dealer said as long as I had it serviced before 2500 miles I'd be good, but I thought I'd ask here for some second opinions, because that sounds kind of fishy to me.

I would hate to have to let my new bike sit for a whole week...

I had over 1200 miles on mine when I took it in for the 1000 mile service.
Nothing was said about being alittle over on the mileage.

Try changeing your own oil and save a couple hundred dollars. Buy a service manual and a parts manual. Read it. A 1000 mile service is only three quarts of oil and filter @ the cost of $300 to $400.

My dealer told me not to go much beyond 1300 and definately not beyond 1500. As i'm beginning to find out in the world of Harleys, ask three different dealers the same thing, and you'll get three differenct opinions. I guess the imortant thing is what your dealer says who might ultimately have to do any warranty work.

The 1K service is free for me, I got a coupon when I bought the bike. I'll take a free service over buying my own oil!

That's good for a coupon. We will do a ride sometimes I will have 5 or 6 bike in my yard changeing oil before a long ride. It's easy and dose not take very long to do.

I had the same issue in 2008 - I was so concerned I called HD head office - the girl told me it was ok to go over the milage - I asked her for her name (to cover my a$$) and she gave it to me. I also asked her to register my complaint and she did.

Cool 1k service

this is what is know as yur 'HD Tax' Unless as some have stated, you get the first service as part of your purchase, save yur $$$$$

$200-$300 4 an oil change is a bit steep - DO it yourself. Keep the receipts for the oil and filter.
