Default Break-in questions

New FLSTC. Planning a 'break-in ride' this weekend. Thinking of going up into the High Sierras because the RPM's will vary a lot on the curves-which I think is good. But, the question is, is the climbing up and down the mountains good or bad for the new engine? Thanks for advice.

Don't lug the engine and you'll be fine.

Dont lug it again, dont go over 3000rpm,dont ride at one steady speed.Would not hurt to stop once in a while to let it cool.
This what I was told by my dealer.

As far as climbing hills I'd try and keep it above 2500 RPM, closer to 3k is better.
Keep the RPMs between 2000 and 3000 RPMs cruising. It's OK to run up around 4000 rpms before shifting. Try not to hold at one RPM for distances (5-10 miles or more).

Yeah I was gonna say 3000 rpms sounds a little low. My dealer told me never to lug it and dont crank on the throttle but other than that just try to vary the rpms and shift before the rev limiter lol. 1500 miles on her and she runs like a champ.

As for letting it cool down I wouldnt see why it would be a big issue. Heat is needed to break in the moving parts and keep the oil flowing well (reason regular oil is used during the break in process and not synthetic). As long as the bike is not sitting for too long while running then it should be fine.

Vary the engine speed and keep those piston speeds low....Heat is the enemy when braking in a new H-D motor!!!
