Break-in questions

Agree the first 50 are critical to valve seating. Take it on a winedy road varying your speeds, on and off the throttle, once you get over 50 mi., I wouldn't ride like I stole it, but your pretty much able to ride it like you own it. I've seen threads where people think the MOCO runs the hell out of them at the factory, I've been to York, they put them on a roller area and take the bike up to 60mph 2-3 times then shut 'em down, that's rught off the assemblt line, so they do need to be broke in.

Yes they do need to be broken in ....for about 1000 miles. As the others have said don't let the engine lug, vary the revs (up to 3,500 or 4,000 down hill) and don't accelerate hard. Personally. I would'nt go near very steep hills until I'd completed 500 miles.....

I'd have to agree with most here, vary your speed, don't over heat by hard and long uphill pulls. An occasional drag run through the gears does help seat the rings. After all, if something goes wrong who's to say you did something wrong, its under warranty.

Thanks to all for the advice. I guess the unversal thruth is not to lug it. I went 100 miles in the hills this am. Mostly 2800-3300 RPM. Went real nice. The Harley Dipstick Oil Thermometer was at 275 when I stopped for breakfast and at the end of the ride. The air was in the 90's. Think this is going to be a problem?

if you read motoman's break in, that sums it up. If you disagree with him, stop and think about the NHRA Nationals. Did you ever notice that these guys rebuild an engine and run it with out a "break in". And the motor puts out over a thousand HP, some going from 0 to 300 mph in about .25 mile. where was the " breakin" on these motors week in and week out. Hmmmmm
