Spot Checks allowed after August 1st in NJ
I saw a memo from motor vehicles today at a shop I visit. As of August 1st there will no longer be "inspections" done on motorcycles. The memo states that it will be up to the bikes operator to keep the motorcycle "road worthy". HOWEVER, it also states that now Police officers can go back to pulling motorcycles over to do a "spot check". GREAT, now we're back to having the authorities set up their little orange cones so they can stop and eyeball every motorcycle that goes by.
The shop I was at brought this paperwork out to show a girl who just had her bike impounded (she got it back today). Apparently the police aren't waiting for the August 1st date. They pulled her over two days ago and wrote her 4 tickets and impounded the bike. She was showing us the tickets. One for a non-DOT helmet, one for handlebar height (the bike has 16" apes), and two other tickets for violations I couldn't read the guy's scribling on the ticket. She initially got stopped for high handlebars.
Spot checks had become illegal here so they stopped doing them. How soon they forget. What's that old quote???>>> Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it
My 99 RK is legal enough to pass any inspection but I guess I'll have to buy one of those DOT Gazoo helmets now.

"Inspections" will still be done, It will just be the Cops that are doing them for you guys! .......Sounds like a money maker to me. For the state that is

That's right the state used to get 50 cents for each sticker used on an inspection.
Money was the motivation for the change. Not to reduce big government.

Spot checks have been in place for commercial vehicles for a long time. DMV set up the stops.
It does sound like a fishing expedition to me. Spot check this!!!

He worst part is if your helmet fails they'll impound the bike. I pulled into one on 541 in Mount Holly. The cop asked where my reflective tape was. I told him Pa reg. I don't live here. He was ready to get me.
That tape is cheaper than the tow bill.

Getting pulled over for an obvious violation (high handlebars) isn't a spotcheck.
Routine stops as they used to call them are illegal but roadside inspection "traps" have been in use for years.
