Default Oil pump or filter failure

Last night I was comming home and noticed my engine light on then noticed my oil pressure had dropped to 0 psi running 70 mph. I pulled off the road checked my oil and it was full. Started the bike back up and all was normal again. headed on down the road and ith did the same thing after a few miles. Then it would go back to normal. The next 7-8 miles home it would do this.

Now for the specifics. Its an 04 Ultra Classic with 48000 miles. Oil and filter changed 1500 miles ago. Running Royal Purple 20/50.

I am suspecting either pump or filter failure but has anyone else had a somilar problem?

With 48000 on the clock, have you ever checked the cam chain tensioners? These can cause oil pump failure if worn out/broken.

Ditto to that junk HD put in the cam case. My oil pump was galled bad from tensioner material. This was on a motorcycle that had it's oil changed every 2500 miles with 35,000 on the clock. My one question is this---is your oil pressure idiot light coming on when the oil pressure goes to zero on the gauge? I have had gauge failure before. If this engine is going to zero on oil pressure it will be junk soon.

The engine light will come on occasionally when it goes to 0. Only rode it about 8 miles or less doing this. I do have the extended warranty and will be taking it back to the stealer this weekend.

If you lose oil pressure...Your lifters will let you know it...+ 1 on the cam chain tensioners...If they haven't been checked or replaced...I would have it done asap.

Sounds like you have a pump problem when the idiot light and the gauge agree. Like stated above the lifters should start raising hell when all this goes to zero. I would not start that engine or even attempt to ride it anywhere any more.

With no pressure that engine would be sounding like a tank. Have you checked the connection at the pressure sender, this issue is probably an electrical one. Good luck
