Default Teach me old wise ones

I come from a long line of Bikers; my Dad, his Dad, my Uncle, my Step Dad. I've been riding street bikes close to 20 years. And off road even longer.

I was thinking of taking the Advanced MSF course as I'm sure there is still plenty for me to learn.

Thought it might be nice to start a thread for all levels of riders to share anything that might help others learn how to ride better or even safer.

Not sure where to start so I'll share the best thing my step dad ever told me...

"Respect the road, respect the bike and just maybe it will respect you back."

So go ahead flame away... or maybe share something that will help someone.

I'm not old, and surely not wise, I've been riding for less than three years, but I've been driving (and I mean driving, not being carried around by my car) for over 20 years now.
This is my advice: you may know the course, but you can't know the road. The road always has one more trick up its sleeve.
So, no matter how many times you went down that same road, always be careful.

Also, always wear protections. They won't save you if you crash into a truck at 80 mph, but a stupid fall that can cost you a trip to the ER can turn into just a lot of swearing and a new helmet or a new jacket.

If you can't pick her up off the ground, then don't let her ride on the back.

Respect others on the road.
Remember you are invisible, the few people who can see you will try and run you down.

"You are NOT 'invincible', but you are 'invisible'. RIDE THAT WAY !!!"

I went with the ex-GF when she took the MSF Course. The instructors knew me, and "akst", "Gumby, WTH are you doing here?"
"Jus' came to see how many BAD habits I've accumulated in the past 35+ yrs." And there were MANY !!!!!
I still recommend it, even to those with lotsa experience. GOOD REFRESHER !!!!!

RIDE HARD, RIDE FAST, PRAY HARDER AND FASTER !!!!!!

I say, "Remember, everything that moves is trying to kill you!".

My dad told me when I got my first bike, "The first time you think you are in total control is when you will be proven wrong". He was so right and it hurt so bad!

I told my daughter when she got her bike, "Never ride faster than your guardian angel can fly".

I went all the way back to the beginning...lol I took the Beginner class last year when I came back from deployment, I needed the class to be able to ride on post. It's amazing, the amount of bad habits I picked up.

When you stop paying attention, you will pay for it, things happen quickly! Don't be afraid to ride, but pay attention!! Enjoy the ride!!!
