Spin off is not the issue. Mount it vertical and it would be perfect. Until you tore it off in a big pot hole.

You can use a piece of foil and form it around everything and let it drain in a pan. Be careful punching a second hole while its draining, it will shoot about 2-3 feet when you hit it with a hammer.

I cut the bottom off a 2 liter coke bottle. Then I cut a slot about halfway up for my wrench.

It catches the oil filter and all of the oil except for a few drops that fall when I take it off.

Simple and not messy.

If you ever changed a cartridge type filter on an early 60's GM engine and try to dig the o'ring out of the filter adapter while the engine was still hot you would think the spin on filter is the best thing since sliced bread.

My Harley store has an OIL CATCHER to fit under the filter before removing the filter. Harley orange in color with a 12" tube to direct oil into drain pan.
#63794-10 @ $19.99 = not a drop of oil on the engine !!

I haven't done that yet but I have a bottle ready to go for the next oil change.

Was going to post about this one but you beat me to it. This one got me used to checking for leaks after an oil change. Even when you got that skinny O ring gasket in that machined out slot 5 times out of 10 it would leak.

I was tickled to death to see the spinon filter come out!
