Twenty bucks for taking a Life!
Makes ya sick!
Mpls Star Tribune -
Authorities have issued a $20 traffic ticket to a 92-year-old woman who drove across the centerline in northeastern North Dakota and hit two of four motorcycles heading the other way, killing a newlywed and injuring her husband and another motorcyclist.
"It was the charge that was fitting," said Highway Patrol Capt. Kyle Ternes of the May 19 crash. "We took our time ... and did a thorough investigation."
The ticket, for driving over the centerline near Fort Totten, was hand-delivered Monday by the Highway Patrol to Faith Mitzel, of Oberon, N.D., Ternes said.
He said there was no evidence that Mitzel was speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. So, "absent negligence ... there was nothing of that nature that would make it appropriate for charges that are more serious," he said, adding that the Benson County attorney's office was involved and agreed with the decision.
Mitzel, who was unhurt, was returning home by herself after a visit to Spirit Lake Casino in Devils Lake, the Highway Patrol said.
Killed in the crash was Sheri Leidholt, 30, of Devils Lake, N.D. Her husband, James Leidholt, 37, who was driving the motorcycle they were on, was hospitalized and has since been discharged. They were married four days before the crash.
The other motorcyclist, Jason Hunter, 33, of Devils Lake, is now recovering at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. According to his CaringBridge Web page, Hunter has had 10 surgeries, including a foot amputation.

I'm going to take a stand on this as serious as this is it's really being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Who hasn't at one time or another crossed over a hwy line? Thats right everybody driving a vehicle. This IMO is just really a very unfortunate accident.

This is a touchy subject to me. Ok I agree 100% that someone that old should not be behind the wheel, but on the flip side it was an accident and she was not drunk, speeding or messing around that we know of. Now think about this-what if you just had an accident, we all have had them at some point and you killed someone. Would you want to go to prison for that when you never meant to hurt or kill anyone and was not doing anything wrong? Don't think so. Now I also know that if your wife was killed you would want something done about it, but would you really want someone to go to prison for a total accident? Now if someone was drunk or high then that is a differant story for sure. This topic and always dicey IMO since it's not like someone set out to kill someone. Not sure how she only got a $20.00 ticket when all I did last summer was pass a slow car in a passing zone and got a $125.00 ticket.
That lady will have to live with the fact that she killed and hurt poeple the rest of her life and that my friends is something I would never want to have on my mind.

I had a friend in high school that killed a little boy with his car. It was a total accident, He was driving down the road with parked cars on either side of him. The little boy was playing between two parked cars and just walked out in front of him. He never had a chance to hit the brakes before he hit him. He wasnt speeding or doing anything wrong. This was before cell phones so he wasnt distracted by a cell phone. It ate him up so much killing that little boy that he eventually killed himself over the guilt.
But at 92 she should not have been behind the wheel in the first place.
Sometimes accidents are just accidents.

She was a 92 year old woman driving. There is no way someone of that age should be out driving, reaction times slow as we age and lead to occurances like this. The woman made the mistake and has to live with what she did but she should've never been allowed behind the wheel in the first place.

If you ask me, the state was negligent in allowing a 92 year old to continue to drive. I wonder when the last time she was evaluated for driving ability was?
My father was in an accident two months ago in his car with a man that turned left in front of him. The man's driver's license stated date of birth to be 1910!!! He was 99 years old. It is a small town and the policeman told my dad that they would be having to take his license because he can't drive very well. Just the week previous, he had driven INTO a dollar store. He said it was a shame because he lives with his brother and has no other family to help take care of them.
I wonder if this little woman has been in other recent accidents. I wonder what her driving record would reveal.

Sorry people....nobody gives a sh*t about motorcycles or the people on them. The drunk who crossed the yellow line and hit me never did any jail time and paid a small fine after his lawyer continued the case for almost 2 years.
I was a low income student at the time and settled cheap with his insurance company and did get a new bike. Big mistake.
