If battery was weak and now starter is spinning; I would bet on the starter clutch being shot. Starter clutch failure will just let starter spin.

Did you charge the battery or replace it? If its still weak it could do that.

starter jackshft is supposed to engage clutch hub ring gear when fully extended. if starter clutch is shot the jackshaft will not engage ring gear on clutch hub.

I have an update, hoping these pics may help resolve the issue. Ive removed the derby cover and looked into the the primary while someone else is pushing on the starter shaft. Here's what I've found.

The lip where the red arrow is pointing to is bottoming out on the back of the primary cover (see second pic with red arrow) When this bottoms out it does not allow the pinion gear to make contact with the clutch sprocket.

Also notice the area where the yellow arrow is pointing. There is slop in the pinion shaft. Is that normal? It would seem if there was not slop in the shaft the pinion gear would be able to make contact with the clutch sprocket

Inside of the primary and the thrust washer
