no helmet law in az but i wear a novelty helmet. it appears to offer more protection than a do rag. i haven't done any scientific testing to prove it though.

Why is it that a Government rating on anything is considered better (in this case 'safe') than something without said rating? (This is the same government entity that would ban motorcycles completely because they are unsafe if it would get some votes).

If the government stamped motorcycles as dangerous and deadly, and banned motorcycles which were not stamped 'Government approved', would you stop riding a motorcycle?

Just a few questions you have to ask yourself; not that the government rating is necessarily a bad thing, but I believe a lot of people put far too much stock in what the government approves as a reasonable safety device.

Just like safety ratings on cars - a 5 star crash rating doesn't necessarily mean it's a safe car, just that under controlled crash conditions, certain forces (and so on) were measured on a dummy. Likewise with the helmet.

I dunno, but it just seems too many people are obsessed with some arbitrary rating.
I think the dot test is a good test to have... If the govt. did not test for a standard of protection, greedy businessmen pigs would find a way to sell you a 500 dollar helmet that really offers zero protection and could possibly be worse than not having a helmet at all.

I live in Mass, but ride a lot in NH. I wear a novelty helmet (own a DOT one too) most of the time, even in NH. Probably out of habit more than anything else. Occasionally riding by the beach, I will remember to take it off.

Because, just like a novelty helmet, it will protect against more things than no helmet and nothing protects against everything.

The d.o.t. wearing guys like to rag on the non d.o.t. guys because they are upset they look like Kazoo with the mushroom head and we don't. They like the extra safety but want everyone to look as ugly as them.
Just saying.
