Default First Home Oil Change Today, What a MESS!

Changed my oil this afternoon on my FXSTC. (First one after the 1000 mile service.

First, nice location on the filter HD! You CANNOT not spill. Next time, I am making a small tin funnel.

Next, filling it up. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN you cant dump 3 1/2 quarts right in like a car, half of it went on the ground!

UGH! Oh well, mess cleaned up, oil changed.

That is all,,

There are dozens of threads on here about how to make a custom funnel out of a 2-liter bottle and a piece of cardboard. Many have went through what you just did, and have shown how to avoid it. RD

Don't worry. Next time, after you've built a special funnel, you'll still make a major mess. Keep some brake parts cleaner around and give it a spray after you're done.

owners manual does not say how to avoid the filter mess.. they leave you to your own devices.. nor to watch out for hot oil out of the plug.. it does not speak of all the old oil still left in the lines that is waiting to contaminate the $18.00 a bottle H-D Sreaming Eagle Syn3 that you just put in.. yep, changing oil takes a little research not to mention brake fluid cleaner, old shower curtain, cat litter, etc.etc

Yep, that's the problem -- the OP filled it too full by a quart. Maybe he was thinking Sporty -- they take 3.5 qts of engine oil.

Practice makes perfect ! I am totally surprised by the number of riders who take their bike to the dealer or shop to get the oil changed..I love the oily mess and the grime under my fingernails !!
