+1 on the grease. I repacked my front wheel bearings this afternoon the old way. Fill the palm of your hand with gobs of grease, and then smoosh the back side of the brg. down into it to pressure the grease into the brg. and out the other side, till it comes out clean. Very messy and lots of fun.

When I bought my FXDX in 2000 I did the maintenance myself and I have had days like yourself. Oil all over the garage floor, very messy and disconcerting.

why waste your hard earned bucks on all of those fancy schmancy gizmos that will cause you more frustration than they are worth?
slide a piece of tin foil under the filter, knock a hole in the filter with a hammer & screwdriver and while the oil is running down the tinfoil into your drainpan, you could be twisting the top off of your favorite cold one instead of scrambling for pizza boxes, news paper or paper towles!

I just looked it up. The 2009 has a larger oil tank.

That's interesting. Wonder if that helps any with the cooling of the engine. Seems logical, no?

Changing my fluids is one of the few "wrenching" tasks I feel confident doing. My mechanical abilities are limited I have learned. Getting oil under my fingernails and on my jeans make me feel like a "real man" and provide me a sense of accomplishment. I not only ride my Harley but I "work" on it too! Spilling SOME oil is unavoidable and will void your warranty if you dont!

Brake Cleaner is a must for a lot of shop work. I use it all the time for things other than what it was designed for.
