I kind of like where the oil filter is located. It couldn't be much easier to get to. Next time put a couple of pieces of paper towel under it -- it will fit if you take your time. It won't keep all the oil off the regulator and floor, but most of it. I have a fair sized low pan that catches almost all the drips.

You can make a nice oil safe out of a small piece of aluminum flashing. It will work better if you can make abut a 1/4" hem on the inner and outer edges. Create a small "v" on the outer edge and you'll aim the oil into the pan when the filter is removed. The advantage of this system is that it controls the oil spill and still allows a strap type wrench onthe filter.

I had a local indy (custom builder and mechanic) do my 1000 mile fluid changes, wanted to see if there were any tricks to it. He made a damn mess all over the front when the filter was taken off too. I don't know how many thousands of oil changes he's done, probly a few, and he makes a mess. I won't feel bad about making a mess the next time. I've got a couple cans of break cleaner in my shop, normally reserved for when I've got to pull the front axle of my Jeep apart, so I'm all set.

Next, filling it up. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN you cant dump 3 1/2 quarts right in like a car, half of it went on the ground!

UGH! Oh well, mess cleaned up, oil changed.

That is all,,

Oil, grease, dirt, and grime...

When applied generously to those nicely faded jeans, gives a man the look of CONFIDENCE! (Not to mention, he'll be feared at the local pub by all those wearing shiny new leathers and sporting spotless chrome!)

You are now a lot more educated about the correct way to change your own oil.I bet the next time will be a lot easier.
