Question is that I was going to by a half helmet or shorty. After talking to a friend at a dealer he said that they are nothing but novelty items. Is this true? It does have the DOT logo on the back (not the Snell). I understand the best protection is a full helmet with shield. Thanks in advance for your feedback.
I used to wear a half-helmet. Three years ago I was hit by a truck and my head slid down the curb for quite a few feet (I was too busy screaming in pain to measure exactly :-). The side of my helmet was totally scraped down. If I had hit 4 inches higher on the curb, the side of my face would have been scraped off.
One month in the hospital, six operations, two years of PT and I'm riding again, but I would never wear anything but a full-face again. Just remember the old joke, "Only cover the part of your face you wish to keep in the case of an accident."
I'm not not commenting on the whole helmet/no-helmet debate. To each his own.
While YES! There are numerous examples of high speed wrecks in racing , HOWEVER pretty much everyone is going the same direction , there are few hard immoveable objects not protected to dimish the hurt, the riders are far better protected by not only thier gear by knowing HOW to fall, tumble and slide!
I wrecked at over 100 mph on the street. Helmet, leather jacket, hard soled shoes, gloves, Navy dress blues pants. Walked away with a slightly broken right foot (from the bike going down on it), some stitches in my left knee, kind of bruised, sore & beat up all over.
