Do you ride for the speed??
I am not a speeder in my car. I am also not a speeder on my bike.
Most of my riding friends are the opposite. They tend to ride for the speed. Even if we go on a scenic backroads ride they are usually traveling so fast its impossible to even see the scenary. The speeds I am talking about are this. Does this seem fast?? It certainly seems fast to me.
55mph limit They are doing 75-80
65mph limit They are doing 80-95
35mph limit They are doing 55
40mph limit they are doing 60+
I never ride more than 10mph over the speed limit.
The question I am always pondering is this...
Are most motorcyclists reckless by nature? Most of the ones that I meet are. They have that you only live once attitude and think nothing of banging 25mph over the speed limit with no helmets with their wives on the back.
I tend to be conservative and cautious. If I take a scenic route I want to see the scenary. If I am on the highway, I ride with the flow of traffic. If my wife is on the back, I kick it back a notch.

For the most part I am a keep it below 10 over. Every once in a great while if I am out in the country and I am not site seeing I will wick it up a bit. Nothing stupid.
Now on the flip side I refuse to wait on people. If the speed limit is 55 and I am running 55 and you are lagging I will leave you behind. Some people I have ridden with are more concerned with seeing a deer in the field a 1/4 mile away rather than paying attention to the pace of the group. I am all about being safe but I don't want to have a 4 hour hundred mile trip either.
Most peoples wives I know would cuff them in the back of the head for going 90 with them on the back.

I seldom ride over 70-75 on the highway. Where I have a problem is doing 50 in a 35, or something like that. I'm usually going too fast in the city, unless I'm really careful!

If i rode for speed I wouldn't own a harley.....don't get me wrong I can break the speed limit on my hd but im more of a 5-10mph over the limit kind of guy....I dont need anymore tickets....if my friends rode like your buddies I'd find new friends

I for one cannot afford the speeding ticket and the ins. rates that go with it.
Usually less than 10 over.
However, there is a nice on ramp at my house, long lazy entrance to an exit only turn a mile up the road - damn its hard not to rock on it to about 90 - every ONCE in a while when I am going that route.

Typically I am close to 10 over and if in a hurry to get home from work I might even push it to 15 over if the flow of traffic will cooperate.
No sense in giving away extra money to the local courts or to the rip off insurance companies.

I usually ride at around the same speeds I would be driving in the same situation.
Then again I have taken my Ultra above speeds mentioned, it felt comfortable, about the same as running 55 MPH. No rush, no thrill.

for a younger generation point of view (21 years old), i dont ride for the speed. i ride for the freedom i feel when on the bike.
i typically dont look down at the speedo, i can generally feel whats safe for the road, but i rarely ever go above 10 over the limit.
if im in a group, i stick with the group. i dont like riding under the speed limit either.
yeah its fun to open it up on a road youre comfortable on, but if i do, its not for very long

10 over seems to be about the norm, and that's where i am most of the time.
like will 2002, i lose track of my speed a little bit in those in-between 35-40 mph zones.
i'll look down at the speedo and see that i'm doing 50 thru town and back off.
when i want to open it up, there's a mile long road to get to the turn onto my street, houses on the left side, railroad on the right, so there's essentially a 10 foot high wall on either side of the road.
damn the bike sounds good crankin thru 2nd, 3rd, 4th headed down that way.
