California Riders - Ever Get Ticketed for Side Mount License Plate?

"Excuse me sir, I'm going to have to cite you for parking in a handicapped spot"
I realize this thread is months old, but I just purchased my first Harley and was going to relocate the plate to the side, so my search led me here (I'm in CA).
I noticed the final pic has the plate rotated on its side. This is OK? I would think the CHP folks would argue it's more difficult to read. Does anyone know what the CA code says regarding plate orientation? I will be taking the bike to other states, so info on plate orientation for the nation would be welcomed.
Thanks.

Regs may state 12" off the ground but it's common to get popped for anything under 15"or about the length of that 4 D cell flashlight they love to carry just depends on the cop and how his day is going . Seen that used a number of times to measure with , Bummer man .

i hate to say it, but technically the cop is right.. the law says the plate must be mounted to the rear of the vehicle and clearly visible. technically the side is not the rear and its not clearly visible from all angles..
do i agree with the law.. nope.. just saying is all..

I glad you got it signed off.
Though the cop was right to write you up. The plate was to far forward from the rear.
As to the factory having side mount plates does nothing for your case because the factory mounts are much closer to the rear then your original plate holder. And you bike didn't leave the factory that way.
However in many states, such as NY the side mount plate also has to still be mounted horizontally or you will get a ticket if mounted vertically as in your new photo. You need to check out if the vertical mount will get you into new trouble in your state.

See how well that one works when he decides to call the tow truck for gross equipment safety violations just to f*ck your day up for saying something that stupid .
You get to watch the bike leave on a flatbed not strapped down very well and your waiting for a ride home to show . You get to pay the tow & inpound fees not to mention some of that expensive bling disappeared off the bike in the tow lot . Come court day he doesn't show judge doesn't want to hear anything from you kicks it and you get to pay court fees and lost wages dealing with it all . Ya baby man up and tell him like it is .
