School me on compression releases
#11
You should not need comp releases on any stock or lightly modified.Even modified go with a bigger starter it's the least expensive way to go,unless you are tearing into the motor.

It appears that the motor has all ready been torn into. I'm not sure what size motor it has in it, but I will in 2 weeks. It has definitely been built though

First off, being that it is an 2007 model the possibility of it having automatic compression releases is possible, BECAUSE you did not specify MANUAL, and I was making an attempt to inform you that the Auto-compression release was an option.
My engine has the biggest big bore kit known to Harley, along with being stroked, now it is not the biggest inch motor on the market, it is the biggest engine to come stock on the high performance line that Harley makes.

Thanks for the info. I found the manual ones on top of each jug. I'm new to the HD world and had no idea what I was even looking for, or where to find it LOL

this is my first Harley also, and I being old school, when the sales guy told me about the compression releases on mine I had to look for them, before I was told they are automatic. The only bikes that I ever had that the compression releases were on was old dirt bikes and they were all manual, so I too went through this. Being told about them, I have wondered how they work but have not taken the time to research it (or very little time).

Unlike the Comp Release(s) on a dirt bike, these manual CR's are a simple spring/catch/release mechanism, used to lessen strain on the starter motor during startup. On the dirt bike you had controlled releases that allowed you to use them for engine breaking. I believe the automatics work the same, except that you do not have to press them (open them) down before starting. Once ignition is achieved, they close automatically, and allow full compression in the cylinder. At least, that's how I understand it...

Is there a secret to using these CRs without burning you finger tips? I know you just have to push them in and it only takes a fraction of a second, but these little dudes get HOT!

+1 - After 2 torn up starter clutches in 25,000 miles, I ordered an "All *****" starter from Eastern Performance. The last 35,000 miles have been trouble free.
