A gallon of gasoline will produce the exact same amount of CO2 no matter what type or how efficient of an engine you burn it in. It creates 19 lbs of CO2. So if you use less gasoline you produce less CO2 which is the big greenhouse gas everyone is claiming is causing global warming.
+1, no way around it, except to use less of it

yes a gallon of gas produces the same, but the equipment attached to the tail end of that process is different

it's been know for years that the lawn equipment engines are very high producers of pollution (lawnmowers, blowers, etc).

if you burn a gallon of gas out in the open, or burn it through a modern high efficient vehicle engine (pzev) its pretty obvious you are releasing energy in both ways but the emissions produces will be very different.

why is having cleaner air a bad thing? if there is ever a vote for "who wants cleaner air" and "who doesn't want cleaner air" ... I'll take cleaner air (and I for one wouldn't mind going back to the days of riding a horse! and lynchmobs for quicker justice, but i digress )

That's a scary thing. The way this bill is written now would include all bikes, presumably since 1979, which is when motorcycles were first included ino the Clean Air Act. Even though motorcycles may be "dirty" compared to cars, the total effect of their emissions is quite small. There are fewer bikes, and for the most part, they are operated on the roads far less.

This bill is not a practical solution on any level. There are anti-tampering laws already on the books. This is actually a back door noise ordinance, by giving law enforcement a tool to enforce stock exhaust requirements. Before you 49 staters start thinking you're glad you don't live in California, just be aware that where California goes on these issues, the rest of the country follows. Look at the 2010 model Harleys. These are 50 state bikes now, the EPA copied CARB's standards virtually word-for-word.

how can a 7lb gallon of gas and the air it burns = 19lbs after creating heat and mechanical motion? e=mc2

There was a study done in Australia about a year ago. You can look it up, I'm too lazy.

They found that an average sized dog has the same carbon footprint as a mid-size SUV being driven something like 15,000 kms per year.

Can't wait till they try putting cats on our dogs...

And how much pollutants are caused in the process of acquiring, manufacturing and transporting all the fuel consumed by cars vs the fuel consumed by motorcycles?
