40 miles (Ben's Atlantic Co.) is better than 80 up to Collingswood for service. Hope they stay open. If Sam reopens as an independent, I'll give him my business. I also heard that the MOCO is closing a lot of dealerships.

I question that HD ordered them closed. Since they are a franchised dealer, HD would have to buy them out.

It is more likely that was said to save face for a failing operation.

My understanding is there are a limited number of dealerships available in the service network.

The international expansion into India and China will require a dealer network in those countries. When the global economy rebounds completely the dealer networks in two of the largest populated countries in the world will be in place. When the recession is over HD will be in a position to be profitable again and grow their world market like never before. They will truly be a global company and finally to compete with Honda and Yamaha.

Harley Davidson is just readjusting after a long 20+ year expansion. Like many long term US businesses the State governments have long over taxed them and consider that they should pay for the priviledge of doing business there. Now that the economy has retracted the States & labor unions don't want to retract with it so it is cost cutting time. Any dealers who are not generaing X% profit get the boot. Production levels get cut to keep margins up, people get laid off. Very simple really. The market is just not what it used to be. It probably won't be for several decades as this is a generational thing.

Just like General Motors,

Corporate greed trumps valuable customer base every time,

The new CEO of Harley most likely does not even ride nor own a motorcycle,
