On older Softails the second thing you do (after checking the battery, charging out put and connections) is pop off the dash and check for broken or loose wires at the ignition switch. Although I think a 2000 has the newer style switch, but it still doesn't hurt to check there. Wiggle the wires with the bike running and see if it acts up.

If It is was running at speed when you lost power I doubt if it is your battery. I would also check the stator and voltage regulator due to the fact that that is what is running your bike, it only uses the battery to start and run at idle.

Cool

Hey...It can be the battery and happen at speed. I bought a 2007 Dyna with a battery tender pigtail already install. The bike died 3 or 4 times going 40-60 mph. No power, nothing. Checked the battery and it was a little loose but the main problem was the pigtail was installed between the battery and cable, and it was arcing. Reinstalled the battery cable next to the battery then added the tender pigtail....not any problems in almost a year. Hope that helps...

No speedo ,no odometer do you have brake lights or turn signals if not you have blown the aux fuse which is probably do to a chafed wire some where. The tough part will be figuring out where. Happened on my Electra Glide turned out to be a speaker wire under the fairing found it by accident. Good luck.

just had a total shutdown while riding my 09 Ultra. there's a longer story here, but ground wires are a first likelihood. make sure your positive and negative on the battery are tight. then make sure the battery ground to the frame is tight. I have 2500 miles on my ultra and the ground to frame was loose and caused the bike to stop running at any time. also, with this bad ground, the clutch cable went bad since without the proper ground, the clutch cable becomes ground and the lining melted and made the clutch pull hard. two dealerships in Pittsburgh couldn't figure it out, but Bob the ace mechanic at Zanotti HD in Butler pa new instantly what the problem was. but i digress. check the battery ground to frame after the battery terminals and do a battery load test.
