Police Bikes
After going to the Brickyard 400 this past weekend and seeing about 100 police bikes I was wondering if anybody knew what happens to the bikes after they are through with there service? Are they auction off and how do you find out about these auctions.

RE: Police Bikes
most are on lease and are returned to the dealer who puts new non run flat tires on them, with a 2 up seat, and sells them for more than they cost the year before.
Now that the 07 police spec bikes are 103 cubic inches I think they are going to be in demand when they come off lease.

Our dealer in Columbia, Mo has two that were just traded in for sale. I guess Columbia trades every 2 years. The one i looked at closely is a road king with 9900 miles on it. Columbia even has the big bore kits done on them before they take delivery so it's a 95in. All the lights and sirens are off but he switches are still on. as mentioned above, i don't know if the city leased or purchased but leasing makes more sence. Wish i had noticed the price but with the 07 changes i'm sure it's not bad. Our dealer is selling 07's at MSRP and selling new 06's for less.

Look on the Police/Fire-Resecue section of the HD site to see a sample of the MoCo's contract with the PD. Some of the fleet bikes are also sold or leased to individual Officers for side-job escort duty. Typically, there's 1-3 years of fleet duty and then the bikes are returned to the Dealer and civilianized for re-sale.
At least one of these old Police bikes has ended up in the possession of a crazy man in San Antonio...

before my friend died (and I inherited his bike) he was going to get an 06 FLHTPI because HD had offered the department some killer deal on a lease, like 100 bucks a month.

in new orleans they generally get $10,500 and up. most are very low miles. here in guntersville, al the chief lets friends know when the dealer is getting them back so they can get there first. here the bikes are solid black and rarely have over 1K miles on them

RE: Police Bikes
When the PD turns the bike back in to the dealer for the trade in value on a new model year, the bike is decomissioned and can then be sold to civilians. That's how I was able to purchase mine from a dealer.
