Well I got another new spring from a local indy, $4 chrome! Drag Specialties.
Had the wife hold it up, 5'9" 200....put the spring on with NO problems with the stand against the frame. But it still has some slop in it. moves down some when I lean. Not as bad as the original spring, but not where it belongs. Maybe the nut needs to be tighter on the top.

One trick is to go to the bank and get a roll of nickels and stick them between the coils.

trick not needed when you do it with stand up.

so you uysed the wife for a wooden block to hold the bike up? or...wait..

No I let her get on it and hold the bike up while I prayed if it was going to fall it went opposite of the side I was laying on..
