I replaced mine last year after it fell off,never occurred to me to not put a block under the bike and try it with the kickstand down.....

I also used the pennies between the coils trick. worked like a charm, other than trying to find enough pennies.

Here is a trick that worked well for me, a 95 Softail. Remove the locking tab on top of the jiffy stand itself. You will need a stand, or someone to hold up the bike. With the stand in holder, attach the spring to the holder, move the jif stand toward the front of the bike, put the bent end of spring in the hole of jiffy stand. Put spring back to "down" position, attach locking tab...Your done. Good luck

with the jiffy stand up and as above " coins in the coils of the spring to stretch it out to make removal and re-installation easier. with a new spring, you can bend it and place coins or washers between the coils. this will expand the spring without stretching it. once on, just pull the coins or washer out and the spring contracts." it took me two springs to get it correct. good luck on ordering another one

I found a spring at work that I had to shorten to get by until I get a new one...again.
Al least it stays up.

The stand has to be against the frame to install a spring alone.
