5000 service cost and what do they do?
I got my bike used the day before thanksgiving with 1900 miles on it. The red mistress is just about to cross over the 5000 mile mark (in about 20 miles).
A couple of questions.
1. How much is the 5000 K mile service going to cost?
2. What do they do?
3. How long will it take?
4. How long can I put it off before I risky anything on the bike?
I am proud that I have put 3000 miles on her since thanksgiving esp given this is my first bike and we had a hell of a winter so she was parked for like 2 months of blizzards. May not seem like a lot to many of you but it is for me.

Liz, prices vary around the country, but expect it to be in the $300-$400 range. The dealers usually have a flat price for this service, not including synthetic oil, that's an up charge.
Call your local dealer for the price and ask if they will do it on an appointment basis. With an appointment, and assuming they are ready to start the work at the appointed time, figure <1/2 day.
There should be a service schedule in the back of your Owners Manual that details what work is "supposed" to be done at that service interval.

i can not see it being more then 250dollars for an 883,if it were me i would put a new air cleaner element in her and change all the fluids check all the nuts and bolts then ride on red misstress maybe you could find some one to help you do it?

The above posters pretty much cover it. I change my oil and oil filter at 5k and that's it. I do look at my air filter and it is always OK. You should know from riding if your clutch, brakes, etc. are OK. If you wash your own bike you should have already noticed if any bolts or nuts need tightening. The original 1K and each 10K service involve a little more.

Good advice from everyone who has posted. I would, however, get the service manual and do it myself, or have a friend help you if you are uncomfortable doing it. It basically is changing the fluids, checking critical fasteners, and checking bike basics.
