Default Shovel

Like it depends how mechanically inclined you are. But a shovel is a great bike. I have 2 . also have a 06 roadking which I ride most of the time. Find out if it has an electronic ignition installed. That will be much more dependable than monkeying around with points . Looks like a beautiful ride in the pic. Just bought this 79 low rider 1340 for $ 5500.00 , that's a good price .Good luck

I wouldn't hesitate to ride mine to Sturgis. Oh, wait.....I already did. It's been worked on a few times, but only because things wear out after 200,000 miles. Failed to get me all the way home only twice in thirty years.

The electronic ignition was first introduced in '78 1/2. It was junk, so most were converted back to points. I've noticed lately that the contacts on the points don't seem to hold up as well as they used to (made in China). Thinking about changing back to a Dyna "S" type electronic ignition. Some of my friends who ride old stuff swear by it.

Good looking bike.Don't be afraid of a shovel. They require the same maintaince as everything else.It is good to go over all fasteners, use loctite on all bolts if not done already.Don't know when they came out with loctite, but it is a blessing for the Harleys.

Nice looking scoot. Do you know anyone that could help you to look at it that is familiar with Harleys? Not trying to put you down, but it helps to know what you are looking for/at. Check for black/blue smoke, obvious oil leaks around the cylinders and heads especially. A good shovel is going to leak somewhere a little bit, its the nature of the beast. Clutch and gear box should work without major issues. Clutches are kind of tricky to get adjusted right, but it can be done. A kind of weak area is the electric starter, prone to solenoid/relay glitches. It should work without banging, grinding, etc. I have heard of a site on the web called shovelhead.us, some people say there are a bunch of hooligans over there, but some say it is the best shovel forum around also. So you might want to check that out. Let us know what you do, we are here to help. It may help to post in the shovelhead sub-forum here also. Good luck! JMHO, YMMV, etc.
