The yellow "support our troops" magnet on my tank is covering a small dent caused by the handlebar-mounted turn signal hitting the tankduring a crash. I relocated the turn signals since then. The magnet will cover the dent just fine until I get the tins a nice paint job next winter.

I have used compressed air on the '97 Sportster....and it worked great. I have used compressed air on a friends 2004 Softail that he laid over....with success. Only one time, this method did not work and the dent was very small next to the gas cap.
I took a spare gas cap. Drilled a hole in the center of the cap and then used a tap. Next, installed a valve stem there. The air pressure will evenutally force the dent out....larger dents usually come out faster than the smaller ones. I don't know what my air compressor is rated for, but I would assume you would have to have a pretty stout one.

If you're going to use compressed air, you need to be careful not to over do the pressure. When I used to test air compressor tanks, I would first fill the tank with water. Then when you add the air pressure, if you exceed the limits of the tank, you won't get shrapnel flying around because the watter does not compress like air does. With the tank full of water, if the tank ruptures, it just splits open and no danger from flying debris.

Using compressed air is very, very dangerous. As stated above, if something lets loose, it will act as a grenade. I have pumped hundreds of dents out off railroad tank cars with water (hydrostatic pressure).
If you don't have a hydrostatic pump http://www.mcmaster.com/(type in hydrostatic pump in the search field) Use can use compressed air on top of the water. Just be sure you use a regulator and bring up the pressure slowly. Remember, most city water lines carry from 40 - 60 psi by themselves and it may be enough to pop out the dent.
Smooth dents usually pop out with no further attention needed. If there are sharp creases in the metal, all bets are off.

I bought one of these to pull a small dent out of my truck fender and it worked fine. Later, I dropped my old bike and dented the tank and tried the ding king on it...works well!! Try it. If it works for you, you'll have saved a gob of $$$. If it doesn't work, you're only about a few $$. Good luck.
