So what good is it if everyone and their mother has one.

I had one of the magnets on my Sportster and it definitely works, but I still had to run a few. With my dyna, I've had fewer problems and haven't put on a magnet (yet). But in busy traffic (when running the light isn't an option), I've had to move up and let a car pull up behind me or else we'd be stuck there all day. I recently noticed at the only consistently finicky light I deal with, that if I pullup dead center in the lane, it triggers it every time. So when I'm first at a light, I've gotten in the habit of pulling up as close to center as I can, avoiding fluids in the road of course. Not sure if it helps everywhere, but it definitely does the trick at the troublesome light I deal with every day.

in tennessee if a light won't trip you can proceed if safe to do so.

I don't think that it is legal to do it here in Ca.,but I do it anyway.

I line up the bike on either the left or right seam and put my front tire on the front corner of the box.
No magnets here and it works every time...

Traffic lights are triggered by the magnetic field induced in that wire loop buried in the rectangular cut in the pavement.
After seeing those magnet-things advertised, I spoke to a friend at a music store. He called me when he had a broken JBL speaker with a big-a$$ magnet; I took it home, ripped it apart, drilled that big magnet in 2 places and zip-tied it to the frame under the tranny. I trip any light I encounter, now....

Another trick is to move the bike forward about 5 inches and grab on the front brake which causes your frame to dip low enough to trip the light.

From what I've seen, light sensors are tripped by two things.
1. Metal Mass.
2. Weight.
Magnetic Induction usually won't help, but, having more metal (mass) is one sure fire way of tripping the sensor.
I've run over sensors with an 800+ Lb bike and have never tripped it, but, using one of those Airport Carts U rent for $1.00 will trip that same sensor.
Go figure.
