Looking at the Shadow in the OP......
the geometry is very different than a Sporty: more rake and longer frame
the oil bag and battery box (as opposed to the iconic Sportster 'triangles')
tank shape (definitely not the peanut and not the same curve as the 'Custom' tank)
as well as all the other things pointed out already

Comparing it visually to the sporty, I think it's a better looking bike. Like they took the sporty, tweaked it, and came out ahead. I like the bars/risers, seat & back fender better on the Honda (as far as looks).

I've had HD's since 1976. I remember all the "metric" guys would bag on me about how the HD is such a bad design, V-twins were inefficient and cruisers were the worst riding style bike built and that the Japanese bike were so much better.
Now they all make V-twin cruisers!
