OH! Another OIL THREAD, YEA!!!

Something I found out recently from switching to synthetic in my wife's Suzuki Burgman, is that I actually lost 2 mpg! Yep, sure did, according to the onboard fuel monitoring system at least. Kinda stands to reason if you think about it though...

Ever check the Mobil 1 exhibition at one of the larger bike rallies? You know, the clear plastic box with a gear set in it, that you can turn the gears with a hand crank? Synthetic oil clings to metal parts more. Mineral oil looks to be thinner in comparison. So, while the oil is providing lubrication, it is also causing the affect of an oil pump between the gears, which takes more effort to push oil out from between the gear teeth. This would also indicate that the oil pump itself is working harder. Then when considering the claims by oil filter manufacturers about achieving greater horse power by using their less restrictive filters, this is also another place where it would require more power to push a heavier lubricant through...

So now we have yet one more addition to the 'which oil is better' debate!

Dang CroK - Lose 10 horsepower with sys, and gain it back with a hi flow filter... a put a few bucks aside each month for an oil pump replacement in 10k miles.

Just make sure and stay away from anything with transfats. The gov says they're bad for ya. Otherwise any oil will do. I think. Well, maybe I don't.

I use Mobil 1 Vtwin 20w50 in the crank and in the primary and Mobil 1 gear oil or Bel Ray Gear Saver in the tranny.

do you always believe sales displays? How do you know they were the same viscosity? Sales men are not known for their honesty ya know.

Actually, I don't even speak to salesmen or saleswomen. I was talking about seeing the display they had. If you ever do see the Mobil 1 trailer, go have a look for yourself. Not talkin about same/different viscosities either. When you turn the gears there is a thicker layer of oil in the syn tank than the mineral tank.

Mostly I was refering to having lost 2 mpg according to the onboard monitoring system too. And then there's the comical side of having something different to add for the syn vs dino debate... THINK ABOUT IT! THEN FUHGET ABOUT IT!
