I get the same thing, sometimes.
If I come to a stop, with the front brake, clutch in, no problem

If I come to a stop, with the rear brake, slow speed, grinding, occaisionally, like gears that are juuuuust touching, but I feel it through the rear brake pedal...

If I come to a stop, quickly, with the rear and front, clutch in, I get a 'clunk' like the trans is downshifting...

Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesnt...

I am thinking either the shift forks, or the rear pads...

2002 FLSTCI, bought it used, and no issues with the bike, except this occaisional gremlin.

I've put in a new tensioner, adjusted the clutch, changed out the oil, etc.

The service records indicate that the rear pads have been changed twice in 15K miles...

I'm guessing they were trying to fix the same problem...

These are some real odd symptoms.

For one, sounds like the clutch is still dragging when it shouldn't be.
What kind of fluid you guys runnin' in your primaries? Any similarities between the problem bikes (primary fluid)?

Easy stuff first. Tighten your steering neck bearing. Then come back and let us know if it's still there.

This is what I was thinking.

I would look at the comp. sprocket. Sounds like maybe a loose nut.

I would jack the rear wheel off the ground, put the transmission in different gears and manually rotate the wheel back and forth and check for unusual looseness. If in doubt, have a buddy with similar bike stop by and compare.

thanks for the replys guys. iadjusted the fork nut last fall,it seemed like a different kind of clunk. i'm running the hd perf plus in the primary. i thought too that the rear brakes may be locking up and clunking? when i brake hard with clutch in or out i get a clunk (soinds like a downshift) only seems to come from primary side. i also adjusted the suspension and do not think this is it... checked all bolts on rear for tightness all seems good. the clunk is driving me nuts,

You might try readjusting the clutch/cable from scratch to see if that's all ok. Easy to do and no cost. Could be causing some drag or something.

Adjust the clutch cable to allow for a decent amount of free play in the lever.
Loosen the center lock nut and back out the allen screw until it turns pretty freely.
Once it turns freely, turn it back in until it is lightly seated.
Back out the screw 1/2 to 1 full turn.
Torque down the lock nut. The clutch itself is now in adjustment.
Now adjust the clutch cable until there is 1/16" to 1/8" of free travel at the lever.
Tighten down the locknut on the cable and you are done.

(thanks Ryno)

i think mine was a loose shock. It was in for some work and they noticed the shock and tightened it. I haven't experienced the clunk since. When I first got my bike the front end had a clunk. I had the fall away adjusted and the problem was solved.

so... i went over to my indy today and together we went over everything that we could think of to solve this clunk. we adjusted both primary chain and drive belt, put a shim under rear brake caliper, readjusted rear shocks, checked out shock bushings,he felt around inside the primary to check the compensator,no movement was good he said so now we're both stumped
