Trying to get better about using the front more(correctly), as well.

I had a complete lock up of both wheels a couples months ago. Had to stop real fast. Before I completed my stop as I was going down the road a little sideway eased off the front brake to gain control to drive out of the way of a cager.

Proper braking on a motorcycle is to use both brakes together. It must be habit to be sure that in an emergency situation the operator will apply both and achieve the shortest stopping distance. the only exception is slow moving turns. If you use the front brake then, plop you are on the ground.
A high % of cruiser riders only use the rear brake. You know the ones that come to a curve too fast, lock up the rear and slide straight of the curve.

I use both, but depending on the situation, I use whatever is necessary...
Bumper to bumper traffic, just the front.
Last summer at a intersection that I had the right of way, this woman pulled out in front of me. I was about 50 feet from the intersection doing about 30mph. I laced on the rear brake, had I used both or just the front and I probably would have hit her, but using the rear only allowed me to keep control of the front end and I was able to maneuver the bike around the rear of the car... This all happen in a matter of mere seconds.
Talk about leaving a load in ones pants...
