We could meet somewhere in the middle at a roadhouse (riding the bikes there, of course) and form a Think Tank! Call it a Drink Tank even!

Anyway, here's my latest thought on this stuff. Thanks to everyone from The Reverend here in Baltimore, for the even and respectful tone we've carried through this entire thread. Personally, it means the world to me. Thanks.

Faber and TequilaJohn,
Dudes, the realities just ain't that black and white. The world (and life) is far more complex than "you're a Socialist (and therefore evil and wrong) and I'm a Capitalist (and therefore Good and Right).

I understand that you're far more educated than I, however, the results of my becoming more educated made me MORE open-minded about possible solutions to our problems, not less.

Haven't we already seen what happens when we rely solely on unchecked market forces? Isn't it possible that, as in the rest of life, the solution might lie somewhere in the middle?

Isn't it possible that somewhere between pure Capitalism and Pure Communism (since that kind of purity is impossible anyway?) lies the solution?

Isn't it possible that the real answer lies in finding the middle ground somewhere? And that as long as we remain firmly rooted in one ideology we are doomed to remain in search of answers?

I actually think that the recent economic downturn is the result of Capitalism unchecked, in exactly the same way as the fall of Communism in Russia was due to unchecked Communism.

So, as Hunter S. Thompson said in the old days, the High Ground is almost always in the Middle of The Road.... Perhaps we ought to spend more time there, rather than digging trenches and yelling at one another across the road. (I can see the "that's where we'll get run down by the Reality Truck" metaphors coming...).

SO, I propose a meeting of the minds... Where is everyone living and where is the Middle Ground and what is John's preferred Tequila? I warn you, I drink Tequila like a native... no limes or salt or any of that... and then I get feisty...

man... this is gonna be FUN.
It's been a fun thread, And I've been impressed how everyone has kept it a discussion as opposed to it turning nasty. It's refreshing to see that for sure!!

Sometimes Middle ground is what you strive for. If I watch a discussion over something (like a thread in this forum) I'll see two or more people who are "lobbying" to get the opposite party to buy into their beliefs. I'll constantly assess people's opinions and think about their's and my point of view. Sometimes I am set in my opinion, sometimes I'm swayed.

going back to this discussion, Whether we're talking about "Luck, chance, things falling into place or making your own luck". Maybe what the REAL arguement is about is the EFFORT someone is willing to put forth to achieve those goals.

I still stand on my opinion that I don't like seeing scenerios where a guy doing all the right things and constanly having doors slammed in his face while an executives clueless son gets a job because of Daddy's phone call. But as they say "it is what it is". So I see where guys like Faber and TequilaJohn are coming from, If my friend was willing to relocate, take a lower paying job to work his way up or take a different job OR go to night school for something entirely different he would be "Making his own luck".

The Reverend, Faber, TequilaJohn, (and anyone else i'm forgetting), I'll be heading out to Sturgis this year. I'll be glad to buy anyone of you the beverage of your choice If your in that area.
