I've had a tach on every Harley I've every owned and could not stand one missing on my Road King. So, I saved my pennies all winter and just sprung for the Dakota Digital model in red. It should be on the bike tomorrow and I can't wait to see how it looks.
If you want to see what a particular speedo/tach unit on your Softy will look like, at no cost, save the pictures of the units you're interested in, enlarge them to about the same size as your stock speedo and print them out in color. Cut the photo out of the speedo unit and tape it down over the stocker, poor man's mock up of how they should look Just another way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Started thinking about getting one last year too.
Don't find you really need it but I do find myself wondering from time to time what the engine speed might be.
How come I got a feeling this thread is going to cost me some dough?

Like others, I would rather do without a speedo than a tach. Either one is easy enough to do without, but I can judge speed by surrounding traffic. A little tougher to guess rpm's...
BTW, my personal preference is to have both.

I had a tach on my Sportster and it really came in handy when I broke my speedometer cable.
My Heritage doesn't have one and I doubt I'll put one on it. I can either do away with the windshield bag and install a mini-tach, or buy a combo speedo/tach, or do without a tach.
I don't ride 'hard' so there's no need to worry about over revving. Lugging any motor isn't good and I know how not to do that .... so guess I'll skip the tach.

Wouldn't be without one!
Echo that. I use it as much as the speedo as well. I want to be in the power band... as one article in a mag some time back stated.... want to add some instant powere... downshift. Max RPM is not the answer.
