Motorcycle thefts on the increase
Here's an article on bike thefts from the Arizona Republic 07/31/06. Seems theves are after high speed crotch rockets. Has some good tips on preventing theft though.

Tips for preventing
motorcycle theft
Similar to auto-theft prevention, a layered approach to protecting your motorcycle from theft is recommended.
• When at home, always keep your bike concealed in a garage or storage area.
• When possible, keep your bike out of thieves' sight wherever it's parked.
• Never leave your keys in your bike, even when it's parked in the garage.
• Be wise about parking your motorcycle when away from home. Park in a well-lit area. Don't park between vehicles because it provides cover for thieves. Look for a parking spot in view of a security camera.
• Use a high-quality bike lock. Make sure the lock is tight around your bike and attached to the frame. Lock your bike to a secure immovable object. When using a chain, loop it through the bike frame. Lock two bikes together if possible.
• Use your steering lock, which is a first defense against a thief simply rolling the bike away.
• Install an alarm. Alarms and locks can be an effective combination.
• Install a hidden kill switch. Kill switches either disable the ignition or cut power to the fuel system. Kill switches will prevent the thief from starting the bike and riding off with it.
• When selling your bike, be wary of test rides. Some thieves pose as buyers and will take your bike for a "test ride" and never return.
• Install a tracking and recovery system. Tracking systems emit a signal to a police or monitoring station when the motorcycle is reported stolen and are effective in helping authorities recover stolen bikes.

RE: Motorcycle thefts on the increase
hmmm.... guess that means if I leave the Yamaha out with the keys in it I'll probably still have it in the morning, so no try at an insurance claim
Actually, it's for sale and I already told hubby no test rides unless we are right beside them and we are holding thier car keys and license. Having them just ride off with it was my concern.

The way I have always worked the "test ride" issue:
I will "test ride" your cash, while you "test ride" my sickle.

BRose--- BE CAREFUL with that! i sold my 96 ZX6R to a friend some years ago. well, he decided to sell it within a few months and some young guy called him, set up an appt and came to his house. he pulled up in a nice VW (newer) and was dressed well... he let the guy take it for a spin----- and never saw him again, lol
the VW was stolen too.
i never let ANYONE test ride my motorcycles for sale.. unless full payment is in my hand. if he doesnt choose to buy it- i simply hand the money back.
