New Harley Wanna Be
#11
For what it's worth, I'd suggest you and your mom take him to the dealership when the time comes, and let him browse around and pick one out that HE likes/wants! I've seen too many times people try to surprise someone by buying them a bike and then find out it doesn't fit, it's not the right "style" it's not the right color....or they just plain don't like it! And then it sits around lonely and sad cause nobody's riding the damned thing! Let your dad pick his bike! After all, it IS going to be his right?

I started riding again after 30 years and I am sure glad I did not start on a Harley. I started out and smaller metric bikes, less power and less weight. They were much easier to handle and regain some of my riding skills, not to mention a lot easier to handle to pass my exam to get my license.
It took my 2 seasons to finally move up to my Dyna and I am sure glad I waited. I am much more comfortable on the Dyna and really appreciate the bike more after riding the smaller metrics.

You can still make it a surprise by calling ahead to your dealer. That way they can make a big deal of your old man going in and getting a bike for his 50th. You might even be able to work something out if you're going to buy, like $1000 off msrp or extra stuff, etc. for the bike he picks out. Local stealer may want to get some PR out of it. Play it as best you can, and if you need another dad, let me know - I turn 38 this summer. I could use another bike.

I also started out on metric...this 82 Kawasaki KZ440 LTD. Rode the hell out of it through the summer before I bought my Harley. Heck, I only paid a grand for it and I still got it. Just can't bring myself to sell it off.

have a gift certificate made up for him stating a bike of his choice from where ever.....he'd never in a million years guess what's on that card when you give it to him....and that way he can choose his own.
