Default I got to thinking...

I was just reading a thread about loud pipes and the saints or sinners who love or hate them, depending on their view point. Well anyway this thread got me thinking about something. Within this thread it was mentioned that some people change out their exhaust for the "Harley Sound". (Which I might add I intend to do.) But my question for you all is this. When was the "Harley Sound" born? What I mean is this, what gave birth to the "Harley Sound". It cant just be the V-Twin because all of our bikes come with those and yet the stock exhaust ironicly enough that Harley supplies us with apparently dose not give us that "Harley sound" that we crave. C'mon guys I need a history lesson. [sm=smiley20.gif]

There was a thread months ago that explained this well. It has something to do with the cam timing. I will see if I can find it.

Default RE: I got to thinking...

Intresting read, although I am still wondering about the pipes and the sound. Is that more or less just to amplify the sound of the bike what with its piston and cam set up and all those other things that make the bike go. (I know I am not the most mechanicly inclined.) Or is there a time or era that we are tring to recapture by making the bike louder. I quess what I am tring to Ask is three seperate questions.

1.) What sound causes aftermarket pipes to capture that "Harley Sound" that for some reason, Ironicly enough"Stock" Harley Davidson pipes cannot?

2.) When did this phenomenon first take place?

3.) How did Aftermarket Pipes capture the "Harley Sound" better than Harley?

Now this is not a bashing post, I am just wondering when, why, and how this aftermarket pipe thing became the standard for creating the Harley Sound.
Thanks

The pipes aren't amplifying the sound...it's not deadening the sound.
