Default >>Need Help FAST on OIL CHANGE<<

Yes, I am an Idiot. I an changin the oil on my 06 dyna. I have run into a confusing situation. Here is how it started: I rode my bike for about 10 minunts to get it up to normal operating temperature. I then set it on the jiffy stand and drained all the oil from all 3 holes. I let the bike sit for about 10 minunts and after it looked like all the oil was out, I plugged up the holes and started adding oil.

I added a quart to the primary, a quart to the tranny, and 2.5 quarts to the engine. Now after adding 2.5 quarts to the engin, I checked the level with the dip stick. To my surprise, it was showing WAY over full. What happened? I thought the engine would take 3 quarts? Should I have lifted the bike to get all the oil out, or will it drain properly while on the jiffy stand?

After you drain the oil, alway fill a half quart less than the capacity, run the engine then fill to the line as necessary. There's always a bit of oil in the crankcase that is considered the 3 quart capacity. My Softail says 3.5 quarts but I only add three at change and it is always afterwards. You're OK.

Since it is way over full, do I need to drain some of the oil out?

OK, I will drain some oil. For future reference, do I need to lift the bike off the jiffy stand to drainout all the oil, or is it OK to drain on the stand?

I wouldn't drain any until you start it up, let it run for a couple minutes, and recheck it.

I drain my oil and primary on the jiffy stand. I drain the transmission while it's on the lift.

Oh yeah, I did change the filter. Sine the engine has not yet started there is no oil in the filter. Duh, I can't believe that i overlooked that. I used the service manuel on the holes and it has the right, but thanks for pointing it out anyways. I am now off to start the bike and check the oil after a few minunts!

I use a turkey baster for this type of situation. I make sure it's clean first then I just dip it in and take out as needed. Keeps you from having to take out the drainplug again.
