You can't go wrong on any of the roads mentioned by others, and as long as the roads are paved (and snow cleared) you'll have "fun"

If you aren't familar with curvey/twisty roads... SLOW DOWN, keep to the white line.... the mountain roads are fun... but are a lot of work..."ride your own ride" let the speeders by with a wave.
Avoid the roads on the week ends, too many fools out to "prove their manhood"

Earliest we head up there is mid-May.... and we've woken to ice several times.

Couple of my buds went to Boone and West Jefferson this past weekend and waking up to 20 degrees...They had all heated clothing . they said the snow was everywhere and it was beautiful...they had to be careful of the salt/dirt residues on the roads...One was testing a new Car tires for the first time on his GW...He loved it...said he pushed it as hard as the ***** would let him...He said at 65 years old they tend to shrink a bit faster than the 40 year old guy he was following... I will be going up in about 3 or 4 weeks...Like others have said ...look at the weather...
