Used to all the time when I lived in CA. I was told by a cop once that it is legal in Ca because of air cooled engines not being able to sit in traffic for long periods of time. Don't know if thats why, but as anyone for both Nor and Socal knows traffic sucks during commute hours Harley's will overheat.

 

Been splitting lanes since I started riding 26 years ago, bumped a few mirrors along the way. Totally legal in Oz, Do it here in CO......doesn't everyone lane split?

It is lane sharing not splitting.

I do it every day I ride the I-5 but not 80 MPH, In my opinion what you are describing is unsafe lane weaving.

Yup it is cool until catch a wrong edge, those are usually the white sheet accidents that really screw up our traffic.

There is a difference between lane sharing and lane splitting. One is used to keep moving through backed up traffic, the other is used to invigorate your soul. Illegal and dangerous it is, but oh what a feelin'.

Here in the Detroit area everyone in a cage is out to kill bikers. They don't look, they don't hear, and if they did, they wouldn't care. Between the kids with ipods and cell phones to the soccer moms with 27 kids jumping around like monkeys in a cage, every car on the road is an obstacle to avoid.

Do I lane split? Hell yeah!
Does it **** people off? Sometimes.
Do I know its illegal? Yes
Do I ride like I have a death wish? Every day!
